PubhD is monthly event that started up in Nottingham back in 2014, and has spread throughout the UK (and even the world). We are now bringing it to Bristol!
The Bristol branch of PubhD is organised by Travis Bacon and Arne Scott, however this is an idea taken from the original guys in Nottingham.
At each event, three PhD students – from any academic discipline – explain their work to an audience in a pub in exchange for a pint or two. The talks are “pub level”, and the idea is that you don’t have to be an academic to understand the talks.
Engineering Doctorates (EngDs), Doctorate in Education students (EdDs), post-docs and indeed any professional researchers are also welcome! Basically – anyone doing any research that they would like to talk about!
What the students get out of it
A pint or two!
Plus public speaking and public engagement practice.
PubhD is non-profit, so we simply ask everyone who comes to the evening to donate £1, and this is used to buy each of the speakers a drink or two of their choosing. Any left over will be put towards a special night.
If you are interested in becoming a speaker at a PubhD event, please get in touch.
If you are interested in attending talks then follow us on Twitter for updates and check out the Facebook group for further details on upcoming speakers. For other cities, check out the PubhD Location page.
